Review of Network (1976) by Kok Hoong F — 10 Nov 2011
Easily one of the best films made about television. Acting is roundly good - Dunaway, Finch, and Straight all won Oscars for their work - but the most compelling performance to me is that of William Holden playing Max.
Like other well-known Lumet films (12 Angry Men, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) it's acted almost to the point of overacting - a melodrama with some definite comedic inclinations. What it lacks in realism it makes up in spunk and conviction.
Yes, it's a bit overly soap-boxy. It makes no attempt whatsoever to conceal its messages. Yet Network is a prescient movie that may even be more relevant now than it was at the time of its release.
