Review of Nerve (2016) by Justin W — 02 Aug 2016
I must be getting old, because movies about teenagers on their phones for an hour and a half make me angry. While I'm certainly guilty of staying on my phone a lot longer than I should, the generation prior to me lives on their phone.
So many of them take photos of themselves daily, as if its some sort of validation. You don't need to take pictures of yourself every day to know you're a good person. That's the gist of this movie, and unfortunately something that could very well happen and soon.
The technology is there, but a few factual problems would keep something like the concept of this movie going. For one, if you're streaming video for an hour and a half, your battery would be dead.
I don't care if you have one of those battery packs. Phones would overheat, and you wouldn't be able to keep a stable internet connection. Even in a big city there are dead spots. So something like the premise of this film while possible, is probably years away.
I found the game itself interesting, but I don't think it was played out the best it could be and the ending is a huge disappointment/cop out. It's as if the filmmakers said, well we can't top some of the early events of the film so we should probably just end it right here the easy way, the chickenshit way.
I didn't care for the acting from all cast. Emma Roberts is annoying. Dave Franco has done much better (see the 21/22 Jump Street films). The rest of the cast is cliche teenagers who look like they are approaching 30 years old.
God teenagers are annoying. Get off my lawn.
