Review of Nerve (2016) by Jason C — 02 Aug 2016

Nerve is one of those movies you like, but forget about before you get home. The actors are good, but they're all just likable. Nobody who stands out is in this film.

Nerve starts out fairly entertaining and gets more intense as it moves along, but after a while I had to ask myself what ending they could come up with that won't screw up the movie but will cap off the story? The answer is that whatever the perfect ending could have been, it's not the one they chose to go with. The director just found a way to get Nerve over with.

There are a couple moments where the cinematography was OK, but could have been so much better. That alone would have raised the intensity of Nerve. Emily Meade, who plays Emma Roberts' bestie, is probably the best cast character. The twist was pretty good, but Franco's personality makes it a hard sell. Better casting on Franco's character is another thing that would have made Nerve a whole step better. Nothing on him, but he helped make Nerve nonthreatening.

I honestly liked the idea of the movie and some of its execution. The pace was there. It had something to say. If you don't turn your brain on you'll keep from seeing all the obvious flaws and how underdeveloped the story is.

Nerve is more of a movie channel watch when you don't have anything else to do.
