Review of Nerve (2016) by Jared M — 02 Aug 2016
While Nerve has some tense, breath holding moments, a realistic and interesting game to back up the plot, and Dave Franco, it is all overshadowed by poorly written cliched characters, a predictable plot, and lack of a message.
Though it features some cool effects with the filmography and a great pop soundtrack, the story is not one bit compelling. The writers try to push the idea that watching something happen without intervening still leaves you guilty, but the execution is poor; This theme doesn't show up until the last twenty minutes.
It also highlights the dangers of social media, yet advertises at least 15 recognizable brand and companies in the first three minutes of screenplay. Furthermore, conflicts are resolved as soon as they begin and solutions present themselves too easily.
Still, the very concept of a Nerve game is compelling enough to entertain a mostly teen audience who will praise the movie for its weak suspense and hot actors. I would give it a 4/10, recommending it to only teenagers.
