I went into this film only knowing the brilliant concept that this film was built on and expected nothing less than a good movie.
The two young talents (Dave Franco & Emma Thomson) show an incredible on screen chemistry that pushes the film with its mediocre handling of the thoughtful concept. While I enjoyed the chemistry, the concept of doing dares in a world where everyone is watching, was not fulfilled. I then altered my expectations halfway through the film and enjoyed it for what it was.
The cinematography was nice and there were genuine tense moments in a film that felt slightly rushed. The use of lighting was incredible with the neo- noir style that calls back to such films as Tron and the blade runner.
One major complaint was the lack of character development in certain side characters, especially the mother, and throwaway plot devices that never seem to show themselves again.
In summation, I believe this film is an entertaining ride with some great performances by the two main characters but the concept is never fully realised into something that feels unique and fresh. For these reasons I give this film a:
3/5.
