Review of Nerve (2016) by Cecilia V — 16 Feb 2017
Emma Roberts and Dave Franco star in the intense techno-thriller Nerve. Tired of being teased for being shy and reserved, high school senior Vee Delmonico enters an underground online competition where she must complete a series of challenges to earn money and gain followers; but she soon ends up on a destructive path and discovers that the game can just as easily bankrupt and destroy her.
Roberts and Franco are both extremely charismatic and have good chemistry together. And the challenges are rather daring and full of danger. But the plot is pretty formulaic and falls apart at the end when it gets preachy and tries to work in a moral about social responsibility and violence.
Although it's kind of a stereotypical thriller, Nerve's strong cast and directing elevates it, making it incredibly exciting.
