Review of Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016) by Omar L — 29 May 2016

The Frat Pack of Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, et al are no longer the top names in comedy. The reliable comedy now comes from the minds of Rogen, Franco, et al. In the past ten years, comedy has embraced social awareness and progressive values instead of rejecting them and has done so in a way that isn't as preachy as one might think. There's also a certain sort of weird discipline in the raunch of the comedy; whereas any attempt at a joke would make it into a movie ten years ago, today, there is a certain standard that has to be passed in order to make it into the movie.

Neighbors 2 is a superior sequel to the first Neighbors. The jokes and the performances land, the characters are relatable, and the movie doesn't serve as an excuse to showcase dumb jokes (although there are plenty of that). The sorority sisters of Kappa Nu don't have as much individual personality as the fraternity brothers of Delta Psi, but as the collective face of equality in the Greek system, it makes Kappa Nu easier to root for. The movie is all it needed to be: a light-hearted fun comedy.
