Review of Neerja (2016) by Kaustubh H — 28 Feb 2016
A story known by few and a story well told. I have always been wary about Indian films touching on true stories but in the recent times I have been surprised. Neerja is the story of an Indian air hostess who through her and her colleagues helped save passengers of a PanAm flight hijacked by Palestinian extremists ultimately sacrificing her own life.
Like Airlift, this too is a true rescue story and while Airlift was good it did lack the requisite tension. One which was so amazingly done in Argo. However Neerja is a very tense film. It doesn't lag, doesn't preach and keeps tension on tenterhooks.
Sonam Kapoor probably gives her best performance till date, one which might get her some great laurels. The thing I liked the most was her character was not turned into some one man army thing like in movies like Airlift, Baby etc.
Now media is rank with reports that it is innacurately depicted and etc etc...All said and done as a film it is very well made with slick editing. The song in the second half could have been done away with and the emotional drag at the end could have been succinct.
It is a story that needs to be known.
