Peter Mullen gets superb performances from everyone - especially his young student stars. I was reminded of Precious in tone - a film that similarly walks an inevitable tragic path of social realism but which confounds expectations and avoids despair.
The final scene as the anti-hero strolls through a safari park's lions enclosure sums it up beautifully - tragic, comical, full of pathos, meaning and timid optimism.
