Lots of it was good and in the main the performances were convincing. Although it is set in the 70s, quite a bit of it resonates even with a slightly younger generation, in particular the jump from primary to secondary school and the difference between the teachers who didn't give a shit about their pupils and the far scarcer ones who did and even then were capable of treating them like mud on their shoe.

It's quite easy to see how even kids with great potential could become disillusioned and go down another path however, the film doesn't handle this very well and it almost seems like there are scenes missing given how quickly John McGill transitions from a studious pupil into an outright thug. It feels very disjointed in that regard.

A good film with a pretty accurate hold on how both the system and the environment can shape a young person's life, but it feels a little disjointed and with a more considered approach to editing it could have been quite a bit better.
