Mullan puts mountains of creativity and energy into the construction of his violent set-pieces, and yet we know as much about the two-dimensional McGill family at the start of the film as we do at the end, which is to say very little.
Given that this film is over two hours long, that says to me Mullan has nothing to say except 'isn't a knife fight exciting!'.
