Review of Neds (2007) by Jenny M — 26 Sep 2011
Started off well enough - however as the main character descends in to insane depravity and violence, you lose all sympathy for him and his familial situation. There is no real explanation to his sudden turnaround from top-of-the-class swot to knife-weilding, callous killer.
Without a character to care about, I lost interest in the story. A bunch of wired, testosterone fuelled scallies with a penchant for cruelty taint the boy's life by making him in to a monster. But there's no redemption.
He shows no remorse, no guilt, no despair. That makes boring viewing. And a surreal ending that was too ridiculous for words. What conclusion did it offer? There was nothing to wind the story up and even leave the viewer with a decent idea of how his life would go.
Just a random end to a laborious and far too lengthy film. Sorry...
