Review of Nebraska (2013) by Nadine L — 17 Aug 2014
Director Alexander Payne's latest is a gently-unfolding black and white road movie that is stunningly hypnotic in its simplicity. With a sparse score and a cast which seems made up of people found off the street, the film possesses a charming "slice of life" quality which eschews sentiment and emotional manipulation for utter truth - sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, others heartbreakingly sad.
Anchored by Bruce Dern's moving performance as Woody, the film is a dead-on portrait of family, missed opportunities, and that child buried beneath the wrinkles of even the oldest of us.
