Review of Nebraska (2013) by Ryan K — 01 Mar 2014
Alexander Payne directs a black and white road trip drama and let me say that this was a beautiful and yet somber experience. It's the story of a father who thinks he won 1 million dollars and his wanting to travel to Nebraska to claim his prize.
It's a very down to earth film. It doesn't feel like a big budget Hollywood movie. It was just what it needed to be. With it's realistic tone and with a fantastic cast Bruce Dern as the father and Will Forte breaking from his SNL sketch comedy field it was a sensational ride to see a father and son coming together.
Also with Bob Odenkirk who played as Saul Goodman in the hit tv drama Breaking Bad joins along as a supporting role. It was so well balanced with wonderful camera work and a really heartbreaking experience.
It might not be the best film of the year but it sure was a film that holds a big impression about family and aging. Bruce Dern is bitter and old and he just wants to do one great excitement in his life before it's too late which is to claim the prize.
Will Forte is the son and decides to let his father experience it and give him peace of mind. Each of the roles were interesting where Will Forte is the realistic yet when he see's an opportunity to do something that would be fun he wants to do it.
Bruce Dern is a guy with a goal and a mind set. He could look and marvel at the little things but when he see's something like Mount Rushmore he could give a rats ass about it. These two are such great opposites and you can see where they differ in how they think in the end they still love each other and they want to take care of them even if it doesn't seem like they do.
It's a wonderful film and it truly is a worth a watch.
