Review of Nebraska (2013) by Luke M — 04 Mar 2014
Bruce Dern disappears into the senile old codger Woody Grant with the ease of the first class actor that he is. Woody invites a cocktail of emotions, mixed up with equal parts frustration, rage and sympathy, that I haven't experienced since Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Will Forte plays the world-weary son with easy grace, and June Squibb's sharp delivery of killer lines keeps this movie moving.
However, the high quality acting does not save this movie. The film has a great idea and when it finally gets to the climactic points it makes for a good movie. However, the greyscale shot makes the movie needlessly depressing and the movie drags on for a far excessive 110 minutes. This movie could certainly not be watched on multiple occasions, and was easily the weakest of this year's nominees for Best Picture.
