Shot in stark but beautiful black and white, this is the quintessential depiction of life in small town America post the financial crisis. Payne has proved again that he is the master of thoughtful road movies, though this is so much more than a road movie, proving again the superficiality and delusion of the American dream and the lives wasted in its pursuit.
Deliberately paced but rewarding view.
