It is really difficult for me to come down with a solid ruling for this film. I do like Alexander Payne's work, and the acting here is surprisingly good. However, just how good is this film? Is it as good as Payne's latest, The Descendants? Let's try to break it down and see what conclusions we can draw.

First off, the screenplay. I must say this is one hell of an idea for a road trip. The format just works, accompanied by a stellar theme and soundtrack in general that truly evokes the titular setting and Midwest in general. I applaud the writers for taking a risk and depicting a less acclaimed area of the country. In another year this might have taken home the Oscar for original screenplay.

Now for the acting. Bruce Dern is perfectly cast for his role and deserving of his accolades. June Squibb is also a load of fun, if only she got more screen time. The interplay between the characters is great, but we have come to expect such stellar dialogue and interaction from Payne and company. Now for the constructive criticism. I simply have a hard time seeing Will Forte or Bob Odenkirk as Hollywood actors. I love them both on TV, Odenkirk's Sauk Goodman from Breaking Bad in particular.

However, they just don't come across as genuine as they should. Rather the other supporting characters are much more captivating, such as the good for nothing twins and Ed Pegram. This mostly makes up for the laggards, but Forte is just around too much for my liking.
