Review of Nebraska (2013) by Matthew C — 15 May 2014
Alexander Payne's quiet drama about an old father who wants to leave a legacy, and a son who wants a father is worth the time even if it feels like the movie is longer than it is. A simple premise, Dern's character has won a million dollars and needs to travel from Montana to Nebraska to collect, becomes so much more with rich characters in the extended family, especially June Squibb, old friend Stacey Keach and of course, the 2nd born Will Forte.
Forte explores the forgotten son who has stood by his alcoholic and confused father all his life. Squibb is excellent as the devoted, if nagging, wife. She's hilarious too. I have to mention Angela McEwan as well.
She brought a charm and sweetness to the film if only on screen for several minutes. I like these kinds of dramas for their simplicity and yet loud voices. The script is impeccable, crafting people who you can touch.
Very much worthy of its nominations, Nebraska is another gem for filmmakers and movie lovers to cherish.
