Review of Nebraska (2013) by Al M — 10 Jun 2014
A black comedy that manages to still be somewhat inspiring in certain moments, Nebraska tackles old age, dementia, and the bonds of family with a realistic and sympathetic yet sardonic approach. Alternately hilarious and depressing, Nebraska strikes a unique balance of humor and existential human drama as the characters seek to make meaning of the past and the present as well as trying to move into the future.
Amazing performances, pitch-perfect direction, and beautiful black and white cinematography lay the ideal backdrop for a son trying to understand his father as well as himself and life in general. A sad, gut-wrenchingly funny, and philosophical tale, Nebraska constitutes original filmmaking at its best.
