Review of Nebraska (2013) by Troy S — 21 Mar 2015
I've been waiting to see this movie because I love Payne's work. But I was thoroughly bored. There was no character arcs at all - everyone ended the same way they started. You could argue that Forte's character changed, but he really didn't.
There was no deep insight into Woody as to why he was the way he was. He didn't give us any meaningful hints from the past, just broad-stroke thoughts from the townsfolk. And a bunch of old quiet men sitting around drinking beer and hardly saying anything is as interesting as watching.
.. well, the old quiet men we personally know doing the same thing. For me, sometimes movies can be too real and characters and situations can be too spot on with people and I know and situations I've experienced.
This takes out the entertainment for me. I enjoy hints of people I know in characters, but when they are the same people, the movie magic is gone. That's how it was for me watching this movie. I "knew" the characters, the town and the situations, so it was as boring as watching an less-than-ordinary day from my own life.
