Review of Nebraska (2013) by Erick F — 31 May 2014
This was a good movie. The only thing that holds it back, is its minimalism has been done so many times before in indy filmmaking that I can't give it creativity points. We've seen the long shots of middle america.
The slow moving shots for the slow moving people. I've seen the slow back and forth banter between simple people before. Coen Brothers has done it. Wes Anderson has made a career about it. And other movies have failed trying to reproduce that feeling, but this movie did not fail.
While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it has the wheel reach its destination. June Squibb steals the show. People should have mentioned her more. All the jokes hit. The dialogue is what you want it to be.
The characters are subtle but well stated. The theme is obvious but not cliche. Good movie. Good Concept. Good Execution.
