Review of Nebraska (2013) by Sgt. C — 21 Jun 2014
(78%).
A blunt, open, and very humorous look at life, death, family and getting old. This really is the best road movie ever based around a completely pointless journey, but of course the "winning" ticket plot device isn't the main or only concept at play here. Bruce Dern really is untouchable in this role, as he plays Woody without a shred of disbelief in anything the does or says, or indeed in a lot of cases what he doesn't say or do, he's just so damn perfect that this is his movie through and through. That's not to say the rest of the cast aren't very good too, June Squibb as Woody's very to the point wife gets a good share of the some of the best laughs, while Will Forte keeps everything together. Overall a somewhat highly recommended, non Hollywood glossed-over look at small town average life, that tells its simple yet thought-packed story very effectively at its own pace, and in its own particular way.
