Review of Nebraska (2013) by Dan P — 16 Aug 2014
I didn't enjoy this film nearly as much as everyone else did. I felt the family was miscast with a pretty real father and a mother that was outrageously crude in both language and (sexual) behavior. I have never seen an older women act like that in reality or on film. It was beyond crude. I felt it lent to the contrived screenplay by a novice and unreal situation in the real world.
The son was way too calm to be from a family so ruckused. In fact the only two people in the family that were legitimately cast were the two songs and they only appeared in the final quarter of the film, which was kind-of bazzaire. I know that a lot of interested parties read these reviews and I have to say I have enjoyed Alexander Payne's direction of movies, particularly Election. This movie just didn't jell for me at all. Alex, you do great works; everyone says they liked this movie, but very few showed up to see it for all the accolades and nominations it received. I was looking forward to a pleasurable time, but as I watched the movie, the more ridiculous I felt it was. Every scene seemed under cast with very few extras roaming around, too, which added to the artificial filming of a low budget-low impact movie. I wanted to like it, especially since I recently discovered and loved Payne's older previous works, but may have just wanted to tell the truth instead of insult an academy award winning director.
