Review of Near Dark (1987) by ?Joda?Knight? . — 02 Apr 2008
I've had this movie on DVD for a few years now, and never got around to seeing it. Tonight I finally sat down and put it in... and man, I wish I would have done so the day I bought it.
It's very rare that you see a vampire movie that is legitimately good. And, it's even rarer that you see a vampire film that is completely unique in every way. Hell, Near Dark doesn't even have fangs on it's vampires.
The mood and atmosphere of this reminded me of a John Carpenter film - from the suspenseful builds, to the soundtrack.
For how unique this is, i'm surprised we don't see this concept ripped off more frequently. It's such a relief to see a film like this that's so original.
Bill Paxton is unforgettable, as is the whole vampire gang. Great stuff.
I didn't like the third act all that much, but now that I think of the poetry in that a man chose his family over the complete freedom as a vampire is really good stuff.
