Review of Near Dark (1987) by Magill F — 13 Mar 2010
A terrific contemporary-yet-retro vampire western that is unique because the vampires don't have fangs and, in fact, the word "vampire" is never said at all. Even this early in her career, Kathryn Bigelow shows incredible talent for directing and, in spite of one or two pacing problems, "Near Dark" flows along at a good pace.
Eerie, dark, and nothing short of rivetting, this is one of the great, pantheon vampire films. Forget "Twilight", rent "Near Dark" instead. I guarantee you'll have a better time watching it.
