Review of Near Dark (1987) by Fran B — 27 Jul 2010
This movie was one i'd wanted to see for ages. Got the chance to last week and it was well worth the wait. The atmosphere is unsettling right from the opening when Caleb meets a pretty girl in a one-horse town near Texas.
Her conversation with him and her responses to his questions are vague and intangible and make you yearn for the next scene. This vampire family materailises and tries to convert the infected Caleb with the allure of the girl and the brutality displayed by Henriksen's leader Jesse and Severen (Paxton).
The middle and final acts develop this vampire road movie fully and, build-up to a great showdown between Caleb and the girl versus the 'family'. Bill Paxton will make you cry he's so good in this.
