Review of Navy Seals (1990) by Glenn L — 18 Aug 2009
Navy Seals focuses on an elite group of Navy Seal soldiers, including Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men), Dennis Haysbert (All State), and Bill Paxton (Twister), who, when they're not partying it up on the golf course or in bars 80's style (through this film just barely makes it into the 90's), they're completing dangerous missions into deadly areas to rescue hostages.
On their latest mission, they stumble upon a Lebanese terrorist group harboring US missiles, but fail to destroy them. Now, the group is intent on tracking those same terrorists down again and wiping them all out.
There's plenty of action and comedy that's in line with any other 80's-vibed movie (several of them did manage to continue that 80's feel to it going into the early 90's). There are tons of cheesy moments and plenty of far-fetched scenes, however, the action does get a little fun and serious at times.
The biggest laugh comes from Sheen's silly stunt to get his towed car back. Utterly preposterous, but funny. Biehn seems to be the only one trying to take this film seriously. Navy Seals is certainly not the greatest film out there, but it effectively gets the job done and manages to be mildly entertaining.
