Review of Natural Born Killers (1994) by Cameron J — 14 May 2011
Man, what is up with Oliver Stone and shocking, controversial films? I guess Vietnam will mess you up like that. Well, that and drugs and an absurd amount of it, because if this film has taught me anything, it's that Stone did a whole lot more junk than they gave him credit for. No, but seriously though, the film is overwritten, overedited, overstylized, overdirected and generally overdone to make it overwhelming. This works in the film's favor, as it makes it more engaging and quickly paced. However, it also works to its determinate, as it makes it rather exhausting. The final act of the film is also plagued by some slowing down and disturbances, particularly in the ending.
Still, the film stands tall with its neat and rather offbeat style, good cenimatography, sharp satire, good dialogue, fast pace and grand performances, especially that of Harrelson, who breaks the shackles of comedy and makes a booming debut into serious acting. Ultimately, expect to walk away from "Natural Born Killers" overwhelmed by the frenzied filmmaking, but still satisfied by its fine style and strong entertainment value.
