Review of Natural Born Killers (1994) by Andy B — 04 May 2015
One of my all-time favorite films. In fact, it's a generational landmark for teenagers of the 90's. Far from being a perfect thing, Natural Born Killers has it's share of Oliver Stone bonehead symbolism and overindulgence- but the sum total is one of the most original and entertaining films of all time.
So much controversy and hype was stirred up over the violence and sexual content that a lot of people missed the essence of what was going on beneath the obvious (and cliche) social commentary: a pretty beautiful love story.
All the murder and insanity works well to underscore Mickey and Mallory's passion for each other and the extreme nature of their love. Additionally, this movie has one of the most awesome soundtracks ever.
The moment it begins with "Waiting for the Miracle" by Leonard Cohen gives me chills every time. Much of the music was contributed by Trent Reznor during his prime, and some great songs by Nine Inch Nails appear on this soundtrack.
Altogether unforgettable.
