Review of Natural Born Killers (1994) by Tommy H — 19 Apr 2015
Natural Born Killers is just as relevant today as it was in 1994. The point of the film is how television shapes our perception and glamorizes criminals. Whenever you hear of a crime that's getting nation wide attention tune into any mainstream news network and you'll see the focus is mainly on the criminal and the skeletons in their closet. I don't know what effect, if any, this has on society, but it's an interesting subject. Historically, society seemed more blood-thirsty when public executions and gladiatorial battles were common practice; in other words, when criminals were the center of attention.
The movie is a lot of fun despite its sometimes dark nature. Besides the message of sensationalism the film doesn't care much substance. Just a lot of glorious carnage and the maniacal performances by Harrelson and Lewis. Check it out if you're a fan of the homicidal road trip genre. The soundtrack is great, too. Produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The music video "Burn" is worth a watch. Very dark and angry with some heavy themes.
