Review of National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) by Jason L — 03 May 2012
Not as impressive as its predecessor, but Book of Secrets still packs some exciting thrills and more interesting glimpses into some historical mysteries. My favorite aspect of the original was its ability to spark its viewers interest in history. Book of Secrets is a little weak in that area, but if you're already interested in history (especially Civil War) you might disagree.
Nicholas Cage is at his best as Benjamin Franklin Gates and shows off his encyclopedic knowledge of history with charm and a little bit of arrogance. Again you can expect plenty of comic relief from Justin Bartha as Reilly. Maybe the best reward, however, is an appearance by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren as Gates' mother. The chemistry between Mirren and Voight is hilarious and convincing. It was great to see these two big screen veterans match wits.
Fans of the first will not be disappointed. The movie is still full of action, interesting clues, and intriguing mysteries. Don't miss it.
