Review of National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002) by Hans J. E — 12 Apr 2010
A decent film added to the seemingly endless amount of college films released every year. this was one that launched ryan reynolds and kal penn's careers as big time comedy stars as well. the story centers around van wilder (reynolds), who is a seventh year student at his college, where he is highly regarded as the "king of parties" and is generally loved by all.
when his father finds that van is still in college, he decides to stop paying for his tuition, as he hasn't made any effort to graduate. with this surprise, van hires an assistant (penn) and helps many people with parties, fundraisers, and charity work to raise money to help him stay.
with all this commotion, a beautiful writer named gwen (tara reid) from the school paper is sent to get the story of his seven years at school. as she gets the story from van, they grow close, angering her boyfriend richard (daniel cosgrove), causing a war between him and van.
you've already seen this before, i'm sure, so I really don't need to explain much more. this is no american pie, but it holds its own in the college movie scene.
