Review of National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) by Gunter V — 20 Apr 2009
A very funny film that gets increasingly silly (and funny) as it goes on.
The antics start off normal, with the suit-cases falling off the top of the car but gets increasingly more out of control until a security guard as a theme park is held hostage by Griswold in the highlight of the film and its comedic peak.
Harold Ramis didn't direct with great flare, but he got the comedy perfect and it is that which counts.
Anthony Michael Hall is good as the typical 13/14 year old boy and really was one of the greatist young actors of the 80's. John Candy is also great in his cameo at the end. The person that really makes the film what it is though is Chevy Chase. I have no idea how he kept a straight face playing this part. He is the best part of the film.
It might not be very memorable but many standout scenes keep it going and now it has become one of tje best comedies of all time. I recommend this to anyone who likes silly humor. Luckily, though, it ism't "crude" silly and that was a perfect move by writer John Hughes (showing early potential) and director Harold Ramis.
