Review of National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) by Stefan G — 13 Apr 2014
It's definitely funnier than Animal House, and it's worth more than a few laughs, but it isn't really remarkable in any way, and it can't escape being just a guilty pleasure at best. Of course, I say this because of the characters.
Many of the film's characters are stereotypical and flat out unenjoyable, and Chevy Chase's character is a massive jerk. For film called "National Lampoon's European Vacation", you don't get to see a lot of Europe.
You only get to see England, France, Germany and Italy, in that order, and through the whole film, the funniest parts of the film are when the family visits France. Really, it's kind of a dumb comedy film, but it's worth it for the moments that actually are funny, even if you'll probably hate Chevy Chase throughout the entire film.
