Review of Nashville (1975) by Brandon W — 02 Oct 2010
I despise country music. Absolutely hate it, but Robert Altman's portrait of American culture at the time of the bicentennial is just about the damndest thing you ever saw or could see. The twenty four characters that comprise the main cast are all so rich and fully drawn, it's as if you're in an entirely different world.
From country music sensation Barbara Jean to hyper-active reporter from the BBC Opal, there's a lot on display, and never once does it feel like too much or confusing or messy, which is the great achievement of the film.
Robert Altman's subtle direction always suggests something greater, and the payoff at the end is one of the greatest climaxes of cinema. Truly a great picture.
