I love this movie, one of Altman's best. Keith Carradine had a top-40 hit with "I'm Easy" which is the LAST thing his miserable character is. All the songs were written by the performers who sang them.
If you're old enough to remember Henry Gibson on "Laugh-In", you'll be surprised by this dramatic and well-played persona. The "rock" music is indistinguishable from what they call "country" (which I consider pretty funny) but overall, the cast is superb.
HIGHLY recommend. I prefer this over any other ensemble piece, even M.A.S.H.
