Review of Napoleon Dynamite (2004) by Angela C — 04 Jul 2012
The sheer beauty of a film like Napoleon Dynamite is that it captures the spirit of it's main characters so well, that you'll almost always look past it's frequent shortcomings. Yes there is the faintest traces of a plot, but the best thing that Napoloen does for itself is that it keeps you guessing as to what asinine thing Napoleon and the gang will do next.
And it always keeps you laughing, whether it's the deadpan nature of most of the characters or jokes or hearing Napoleon say for the 53rd time, "Tina, you fat lard, eat your dinner!" you'll walk away from Dynamite everytime feeling regifted with a sense of laughter.
The music, as sparse as it is, is a true high school weirdo's soundtrack. No one could ever play Napoleon like Heder did and that is a good thing. It keeps you laughing the entire way through the film.
And at the end, with the most climactic anti-climactic scene ever, Napoleon charms you right back into it's arms for one last laugh inducing hug. But if your still catching your breate at the end of the credits, that's a good thing, cause then you'll get one last bit of Dynamite oodness before you head back into the cynical real-world.
And, as so many critics already have, I hate to quote the titular hero, but to escribe this film is must. Sweet! 5/5.
