Review of Napoleon Dynamite (2004) by Neil R — 12 Oct 2012
Really good at a couple of things: deadpan humour and quirky characterisation which once had me laughing uproariously. But the main character is only sometimes endearing and there is no real plot arc or hero quest which gives the film a meandering feel. The relationship between Napoleon and his two sidekicks is quite touching and the post-credits wedding scene is really fine. Recommended but could have been just a little better if it had put a bit more into the plot.
UPDATE: Have just upgraded this to 4 stars, because it has stuck in my head so long after viewing and I am beginning to realise just how many genuinely brilliant lines there are in it.
