Review of Nanook of the North (1922) by Zacho D — 26 Mar 2009
This is technically the first feature length documentary. For that, it deserves a lot of credit. But, as a whole, the film isn't very good. Why? It's simply just boring.
"Nanook of the North" is an exploration of the Eskimo life and what it takes to survive in the Arctic. However, there's no real drama. We don't get to know this "great hunter" or his family. They're just there, building igloos, killing a walrus, kayaking, and dealing with wild dogs. It's fine and dandy to see that, but there's no story. There's no drama. There's no real excitement. I'm sure back in the day, this movie was successful because no one had seen the Eskimos before. But I have, and I wanted more than just pretty pictures and an Eskimo family. Maybe that was my mistake to expect something more, but I just didn't like "Nanook of the North.".
