Review of Nanook of the North (1922) by Trent J — 10 Sep 2009
It doesn't feel like one's actually truly seen and experienced 'Nanook of the North' until they also watch Claude Massot's 1988 response 'Nanook Revisited'. Held up since its release in 1922 as the birth of the documentary, 'Revisited' proves things really aren't quite as we think â?? which, when one puts documentary under the looking glass, can be said to be true for much of the form as well.
Still, despite its deceits, 'Nanook of the North' is one of the early cinema's biggest marvels, snow blowing across ice deserts, Nanook smiling into the camera. No wonder we went mad for the movies.
