Review of Nanking (2007) by Jeremy W — 16 Dec 2007
A horrifying account of the Japanese occupation of Nanking and the atrocities committed upon Chinese civilians in 1937. I was vaguely aware that this had happened because of the controversy surrounding former Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi's repeated visits to Yasukuni Shrine, where Nanking war criminals are memorialised with the rest of Japan's war dead.
I am now fully sensitised to why the Chinese are so insulted by this act. Very good doco with an innovative approach that combines archival footage, personal accounts of eye witnesses, and actors playing out the roles of the key Western identities who were living in Nanking at the time.
