Review of Nanking (2007) by Kane T — 15 Jun 2008
A truly unique way of filming a documentary. A truly incomprehensible tragic horror with so much evil and inhumanity it wouldn't seem real if not filmed, photographed, and reported. This film hits you relentlessly with brutality, rape, and murder.
THE RAPE OF NANKING book told me of the story. The film NANKING visualizes it and paints a greater detail. Using actual film footage, photographs, eyewitness accounts by victims, and a theater play reading of letters written during the time.
Despite the latter part of the film abandoning its immersive style and depending solely on letters read by celebrity, the story itself doesn't let you go and reminds me the call from the Auschwitz "This world is not this world.
".
