Review of Nancy Drew (2007) by Mvke S — 27 Jun 2011
Adorably cute is the best way to describe this film. Emma Roberts plays Nancy Drew to a T and shows some old stories still have a good appeal to them.
Basically this is a non-offensive steady film of fun harking back to the times when a kids film was a kids film and not so keen to add a swear word or even a mild innunedo to draw a laugh. The cast is likeable besides the two ghetto teen girsl and the actor playing Nick is what you imagine a super-sleuth's boyfriend to be.
The plot is straight forward and the ending poignant. If the film has bad points this is because the material is not always what a modern audience, especially the kids, would find engaging. What I am saying is that the tastes of kids has changed in the decades since Nancy came along and her image might be readable in books but not captivating for them on screen, when she has to complete with the likes of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson.
Still, like I mentioned, there is nothing particular wrong with this film and for nonoffensive family fun, it is up the right street.
