Review of Naked Lunch (1991) by Tyler S — 02 Apr 2008
Fascinating film that's based on William S. Burroughs long thought to be unfilmable novel.Brilliantly directed by David Cronenberg(who also wrote the film's wonderful script) it's a highly original film about the creative process of writing, drug addiction and repressed sexuality.
Visually superb and very strange,it's always involving and highly enjoyable and for a book that was considered by many to be impossible to film Cronenberg did a bang up job.Peter Weller gives a towering performance in the lead and he gets excellent support from the likes of the late Roy Scheider(in one of his best performances),Judy Davis,Ian Holm and Julian Sands.
This isn't a film for everybody,it's genuinely weird stuff but if you're a Cronenberg fan or a fan of unconventional cinema then you'll love it.A brilliant film, this is one of Cronenberg's best to date.
