Review of Naked Lunch (1991) by Joe K — 04 Jan 2010
Here is a hard one to pin down. Going into this film, I had no idea what I was in store for. I knew of the book it's loosely based around that college students manically gush over, but the general opinion of said book always seemed to be "it's unfilmable".
Well, I can get behind that, as this truly is a bizarre movie that relies heavily on surrealism much like Eraserhead did. The visuals are good and interesting, and I expect no less from David Cronenberg, but the story is muddled, confusing, and sometimes headache inducing.
Worth the watch just for the experience, but I don't see a whole lot of people besides hardcore cinephiles repeatedly viewing Naked Lunch. One word review: huh?
