Review of Naked Lunch (1991) by Helen L — 17 Aug 2010
I am not familiar with the work of Burroughs so I took this one as an independent piece. It is surreal, a trip, confusing at first and so weird... But if you look deep into it, piece by piece, character by character (awesome acting BTW), you'll find metaphors about drug addiction, guilt of loss of a love, imprisonment in the system, and the difficulties of the creative process for an author. This movie is a piece of true art, because like a good song it doesn't have a correct interpretation, it "exterminates all rational thought" and gives you the right to relate to it in your own way. It has no period. I'm pleased to see that anywhere.
I am still a bit impressed by all that imagery of talking assholes and giant bug-like typewriters but I'll probably add more stars to it when I sit and re-watch.
