Review of Naked Lunch (1991) by Kevin D — 17 Jul 2010
This is actually a good rating from me since this is a Cronenberg movie. This is also a movie where a talking typewriter/cockroach convinces a man that he is a CIA agent working for an undercover group that has to...do something involving another bug typewriter hybrid. i'm serious.
The specifics of the plot were confusing and the fact that I still ended up liking this movie is a miracle. The movie was extremely likable and it covered the theme of addiction in a funny yet intellectual manner. I've heard that the book version of this movie is a masterpiece and one of the greatest novels ever written so I might like the book better. A lot of people say Cronenberg made a lot of changes in the story of the movie.
This movie is watchable and might just be downright hysterical among a big group of people, but I was lost for most of the movie so I can't really give it a good grade. It's really difficult to piece everything together in this movie and to actually think about what's real and what's fake and how the fake things actually happen. Cronenberg fans will love this movie and those that don't typically like him (me), might actually enjoy this movie.
The saxophone in the soundtrack is awesome too. As usual, Cronenberg got lazy in the direction and for the most part, all of the shots were boring and straight on without any movement. The creature effects and designs were pretty good, however. This is a decent, yet really confusing movie.
