Review of Naked Lunch (1991) by Brad C — 08 Feb 2011
It's odd. Naked Lunch is odd. And I feel like I'm unable to write a complete critical review of such an adaptation without having read the book first. They call Burroughs' novel unfilmmable, and yet here's a film that includes Casablanca references and cannibalistic typewriters.
Besides these instances, Naked Lunch is generally slow, muted, noirish, and infrequently grotesque and shocking, but never uninteresting for the patient, open-minded viewer. It's a drug movie that's surprisingly tame and reserved, and doesn't really exist but to satiate a strange mood with accordingly strange entertainment.
Until such a mood should fall upon you, I suggest you keep Naked Lunch in the back of your mind. Because the right movie at the right time can do wonders for a person's psyche.
