Review of Nacho Libre (2006) by Kristen C — 18 Jan 2012
Nacho Libre is in many respects a VERY GOOD movie - Especially, If you understand Mexican and Catholic Culture - and don't take yourself too seriously!
Many Gringo critics incorrectly panned the movie, in large part because they don't really understand the humor. Jack Black is NOT A PRIEST in this film. He is an orphan acting as a Brother or Deacon, several reviewers FALSELY called him a priest - not the same thing. He has lived his whole life at the orphanage (no contact with girls) then spots Encarnacion - and is entranced by her. (Nacho is genuinely kind-hearted and religious in a way that makes sense to him. ) I am a Catholic and have no problem with the humor, if it was offensive I wouldn't watch it.
My husband is Mexican, and used to be in a Seminary High School - and he thinks this movie is hilarious! The boys in the Seminary school were always a little happier if girls were coming to visit - so what? The humor is a bit childish, but Jack Black's expressions, and Mexican accent and way of talking IS HILARIOUS. Many Mexicans find the movie very funny, and others who enjoy Jack Black like him in this role.
SORRY Anglo Critics - if you didn't understand the humor. That doesn't make the movie Bad!
