Review of Nacho Libre (2006) by Chads. — 19 Jun 2006
In "Napoleon Dynamite", we laughed at the titular star. In "Nacho Libre", it's the sidekick who is made to look largely ridiculous. The filmmaker isn't going to make a major star look stupid.
Most, if not all, of the laughs aren't generated from the script or situation, but because Esquelto(Richard Montoya) looks dissheveled and speaks funny. It's as if Sara Silverman created Esquelto.
Incredibly, the usually hyper Black is almost like a straight man. "Nacho Libre" is somewhat redeemed by an atypical premise and a setting that feels at times, otherworldly.
